Understanding and Appreciating the Sabbath Service

Do you enjoy coming to services but are not quite sure why we say certain prayers or the order in which we say them? Why do we seem to say the Kaddish a number of times? Why and when do we bow? What am I really saying when I recite those prayers?

Adult Education at Beth Sholom

If you would like to know the answers to these questions and learn about the Sabbath service and the prayers that make up the service then this is the class for you. It will help those who feel they need a beginning course on the elements of worship as well as enhance the knowledge of those who already know about the Sabbath service.

By understanding the things that we do and say, you will appreciate the beauty of Judaism and prayer and feel more confident and comfortable participating in services.

An additional and unaffiliated source of information about Jewish history, tradition and the history of Israel is available through the Biblical Archaeology Society (BAS), whose founder, head and publisher is Hershel Shanks. If you are a history buff, BAS is a useful and interesting source of additional educational material. It presents information about Judaism and its historical relationships with Christianity and Islam, both of which are founded on the Hebrew Bible and Jewish history in the Holy Land (Israel, Jordan, the Palestinian Territories and West Bank).

The following link (click on the Biblical Archaeology Review image) leads to additional information for your own reading that describes the historical locations and travels of Jews in Judea and Israel in ancient days. BAR (Biblical Archaeology Review) offers a free trial subscription if you would like to keep up with monthly new discoveries and disclosures involving history, religion, war, politics, family life, international commerce and religious interrelationships and intrigues.
